A great display of professional and managerial skills by a colleague of ours, Dr. Hector Weerasinghe Report By Don Asoka Wijewardena, "The Island"
The Colombo National Hospital, established 120 years ago, on a 35-acre block of land, has won the National Excellence Award as the best hospital in South Asia. Dr. Hector Weerasinghe, who has been the Hospital Director for the past 11 years, was presented with the Award by Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena at a ceremony held at the BMICH recently.
Health Ministry media spokesman W. Wanninayaka told ‘The Island’ that the Colombo National Hospital was a great asset to the entire health sector in the country as it had been providing an excellent service to people in every walk of life. Currently, there are around 6,500 employees working at the hospital.
He said that the Out-Patients’ Department treated 2.5 million patients and around 250,000 in-patients annually.
Around 75,000 surgeries were also performed annually at the hospital. Costly surgeries such as kidney transplants, by-pass and eye surgeries were performed using highly sophisticated medical equipment.
Wanninayaka said the excellent service provided by the hospital was due to the efficient leadership of Dr. Hector Weerasinghe, who has already formulated plans to develop the hospital further. |
